Sony's presence in Hong Kong can be traced to 1959 when the company started a transistor radio assembly facility in Hong Kong through a local entity. This marked an important chapter in Sony history as that was Sony's first production facility abroad. In November 1962, Sony Corporation established Sony Corporation of Hong Kong Limited (Sony Hong Kong) as the third overseas company to oversee liaison activities in the Asia Pacific region.

Since 1 April 2009, the company has changed the Chinese trade name from "Sony (新力) 香港有限公司" to 索尼香港 in accordance with Sony's brand guideline.
